Chlorophyll Responses of Coriandrum sativum and Trigonella foenum-graecum under Municipal Wastewater Irrigation: A Case Study from Bilaspur, Central India

This study presents a site-specific field case from the peri-urban agricultural landscape of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, examining how municipal wastewater (MWW) irrigation affects chlorophyll dynamics in Coriandrum sativum L. and Trigonella foenum-graecum L. The quantitative analysis revealed a consistent reduction in chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll, under municipal wastewater (MWW) irrigation. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated a significant effect of plant species on total chlorophyll and, at peak growth, a significant species x irrigation interaction. Seasonal averaging across the full growth period showed no robust overall interaction, but prespecified peak-stage comparisons identified clear stage-specific responses. Post-hoc Tukeys honestly significant difference (HSD) analysis revealed that coriander irrigated with MWW showed a significant 18.15% reduction in peak total chlorophyll at Day 50, whereas fenugreek showed a non-significant 2.66% reduction at Day 60. Under the local field conditions of this study, wastewater irrigation altered pigment concentration in a species-dependent manner, with coriander showing greater sensitivity than fenugreek during peak growth. These findings should be interpreted as context dependent and as a basis for future replicated studies in comparable peri-urban wastewater-irrigated systems.
