A convenient, fast and high yielding method for the preparation of novel piperidones and pyridinones has been developed by the microwave assisted condensation of a ketone with benzaldehyde/salicyladehyde in the presence of ammonium acetate. All the compounds were characterized with UV, FT-IR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy.
